Not Way Back Then Nor To This Day

Years ago in Austin TX the TV was turned on only for the shows my parents picked for us to watch. Most I remember, some I don't. Some like Perry Mason I watch to this day. I remember the excitement in the house when my parents found out the The French Chef  was going to start showing on our station. Being teachers they were great supporters of NET (National Educational Television). It was the Boston NET station WGBH that created the 1963 television show with Julia Child being herself. Educator, enthusiast, humorist, and a charmingly darn good cook. To be honest I must say that my father and I were the most dedicated viewers in my family.  But I do believe that my whole family became and remain devoted to Julia Child. Just mention her and we all smile.

TYPEWRITER NO. 10

It was a marvel back in the early 1900’s. A beautiful machine that any typist would have been thrilled to have at her desk. (Yes I said “her” for most often it was not a man who worked as a typist in the early 1900’s.) She well may have been a shorthand typist, trained in the 10 finger typing that was introduced by Mrs. L. V. Longley who was the head of a school for stenographers in Cincinnati. This was a very respectable job for a woman that did not require extensive education or training. And there was much less chance of being maimed or killed on the job than many of the other jobs open to women.

Many a woman sat down in front of this machine and felt that thrill only a fine machine can give you. And the thrill that their life was changing forever

Water On Unfettered

Aw just when I thought I would never, never ever do plumbing again...yesterday while filling the dogs water tub I realized all of a sudden nothing was coming out of the hose. I turned around towards the spigot and got a very unpleasant surprise. The faucet was about 6 feet off the ground being propelled there by a extremely strong gusher of water. Very expensive water I might add. After running around for a few seconds yelling at goodness only knows what, I grabbed the "turn off the meter" tool which was close by seeing how it was propping the door the shed shut, and and ran, not that I really run, to the meter. Where for a few seconds I yelled at the meter for I remembered I can't get down on the ground. Not unless I threw my self to the ground. My knees don't that. So I chunked the "turn off the meter" tool and pulled out my phone. I texted my grand-girl "Hep, emergcy, Hep I will be right thereto get u". I picked up the "turn off the meter" tool and jumped in my car drove madly 1/3 of a mile to her house holding my phone and that stupid too. (Must say it was quiet a feat seeing how my car is a standard.) Of course she calmly call the city guy to come shut off the water.
Now I am cooling off after digging out the waterline waiting for that totally inexperienced plumber, Sammy to arrive thinking "There really are some advantages to living in a town".

Food and Care for Free Roaming Cats

It started when I moved here with my 16 rescued cats and 2 rescued dogs. A big reason I moved here was because I had been told it was a cat friendly place with few ordinances. A big reason I moved away from where I had been living was a total lack of official help in stopped the illegal trapping and “disposing” of free roaming cats and other wildlife. It was within a couple of weeks that I encountered the first free roaming cat. It was a big boy whom I called FR (yes for free roamer) and who had a slice almost from ear to ear. Of course I feed him, provided antibiotics, and watched over him. I found he did have a home he always returned to but his person had gone to assisted living and he had been left to fend for himself.

That was three years ago and FR is gone and many more have come and gone. But there are always free roamers here enjoying breakfast and dinner with me.

I remember what I was told long ago when I was grieving over the death of a young kitten. I was told they don’t know they died young, but they did know they weren’t starving or thirsty. They had protection from the storms and a place to bring their young.

The cost of food alone for these cats has increased drastically over these last three years as the cost of everything has. I have supplemented my fixed income with selling my handmade items online but that has dropped off severely and I am struggling to provide food for my own cats and myself.

How can I not feed them? No one else here will. How do you look at an old straggly thing and say “no food for you today”?

Here I am asking for help feeding these free roaming cats so they don’t have to hear me say “no food for you today”. Thanks.
